South Africa's Heritage Day

Every September 24th, we celebrate Heritage Day, a South African holiday dedicated to the diverse people contributing to the country's culture and heritage. Judging by the lack of fresh chicken and other meats available in the supermarket this weekend, it has become quite a popular tradition to host a braai on this public holiday. It feels like this holiday is celebrated similarly to America’s July 4th, less the fireworks.

When visiting another country, one of my favorite ways to experience a new culture is by trying new food. Biltongbobotie and milk tart are now among my favorite South African eats. Another one of my favorite ways to immerse myself in local culture is to just sit, listen and watch the world go by while stationed in a coffee shop. And finally, gathering with friends to celebrate a holiday, such as Heritage Day. What are some of the ways you get a feel for a destination’s culture when you travel?
