The Brass Bell in Kalk Bay, Cape Town

I live in one of the most beautiful beach cities in the world: Cape Town, South Africa.

Out of all my photographs of the harbours and bays around Cape Town, I think this is one of my favorites. I was walking home from enjoying sundowners at the Brass Bell Restaurant in Kalk Bay , when I noticed the bright super moon and took a few snaps. The Brass Bell is a unique restaurant because of its location: most of the establishment is surrounded by the bay at high tide because it is set behind the MetroRail train tracks, just beyond the natural shoreline.

When the tide comes in, the tidal pools swell as the waves crest over their edges, sometimes with enough force to lap the walls and windows of the restaurant.  The best place to sit and enjoy this is downstairs, at the Water's Edge restaurant or the Bikini Deck bar. It's worth the stop to check out the scene and have a drink, but there are better places to grab a bite to eat in the area. You might even spot a surfer or two - there is a sweet spot in the reef just beyond the restaurant to the left.
