Day Trip: Kennebunkport, Maine

I recently took a day trip to Kennebunkport, Maine with some co-workers who were visiting Boston from various parts of the world.  It was nice to slip away from the city to share a relaxing summer day in a quintessential New England town.

It usually takes a little under 2 hours to drive to Kennebunkport from Boston on I-95, but in the summer, I recommend planning much longer because of the traffic. We headed straight for lunch at Pier 77, a restaurant and bar with harbor views. A narrow stairway led us to a room that made us feel like we were guests in someone's summer home. It was so open and airy with views looking out to the water.

I settled on a delicious sandwich over stuffed with fresh Jonah crabmeat, lemon aioli and lettuce between fresh slices of Portuguese bread. Maine blueberries are at their peak in the summer and I couldn't resist tasting the warm blueberry crumble with a scoop of vanilla bean gelato on top.

Because it is a working pier, we walked down to watch some fishermen bring in their haul.

With our free afternoon, we stopped in town to do a little shopping. For drinks and people watching, we stationed ourselves on the patio at One Dock, the bar and restaurant outside the Kennebunkport Inn

On our way back to Boston, we drove along the coast, past the Bush compound (the summer home of George H. W. Bush). If only every Saturday could be like this!
