There are hundreds of artists working in studios around the Gowanus, Park Slope, and Boerum Hill neighborhoods. One October weekend each year, they open their doors to the general public. If you like art, the Gowanus O pen Studi os weekend is for you. If you like lurking around warehouses and homes you otherwise never get to set foot in and always wonder what they look like inside, this is also for you.

With over 300 participating artists, where to begin?

First, browse the artists listed on the Arts Gowanus website. It’s the perfect opportunity to see which of their styles speak to you. Mark your “must see” on the Arts Gowanus Open Studios map (paper maps found here) to plot your route. It’s also really easy to stroll around the neighborhood and pop in and out of whichever places strike your fancy.

What do you do when you get the artist’s studio?

It's totally fine to walk around and say nothing more than a "hi" and "thank you" as you come and go. However, if you do strike up a conversation, you’re bound to have an even more enriching experience. A good way to start that conversation is “I love this piece, it reminds me of ___” or “What inspired you to create this?” or “Your work caught my attention because it’s___” or “This piece makes me feel___”)

Some artists might have prints or items for sale. It’s perfectly fine to leave without purchasing anything. You never know, though, you might find something really unique to complement your style.

By the mid-afternoon you might be feeling peckish. Check out my Gowanus Neighborhood Guide for all the best places to eat and drink in the neighborhood. Some might have specials for the weekend. There are also a number of shops and activities in the area (axe throwing, anyone?)
